As we begin another school year, I am excited for all that lies ahead and grateful for the community we continue to build together. Every year brings new opportunities for growth, discovery, and connection, and this year is especially exciting as our campus continues to grow.

My Montessori journey began in 1989 while looking for a school for my oldest child. The moment I stepped into a Montessori classroom, I knew I had found the work I wanted to do. Watching children learn with such confidence, purpose, and joy completely changed the way I thought about education, and I've been passionate about Montessori ever since.

That day, I set aside my plans of becoming an English literature professor and started down a different path. I went on to earn my Master's in Education and Montessori teaching certification before opening my first Montessori school in 1996. For many years, I had the privilege of leading that school and watching generations of children grow into capable, compassionate young adults.

In 2018, I founded Maple Corner Montessori with one goal in mind: to create that same, exceptional school experience here in Roseburg, in part for my little bonus baby, Mia, who was four at the time. I wanted a place where hands-on, deep, meaningful learning was the norm, where classrooms are warm and welcoming, and where every child is known, encouraged, and celebrated. That vision continues to guide every decision we make as a school community.

Even after all these years, I still consider myself a lifelong learner. The children, families, and educators I work alongside continue to teach me something new every day, and I can't imagine doing anything else.

This year also brings a new adventure as I return to the classroom to teach middle school language arts and history. I'm especially excited to reconnect with students I've known and taught over the years as we explore the stories, ideas, and events that have shaped our world. Together, we'll dive into classic literature, strengthen our writing, and examine history through the lives of the people who lived it. My hope is that students leave class not only with stronger academic skills, but with a deeper appreciation for the power of words, the lessons of the past, and the connections between them.

Outside of school, my greatest joy is spending time with my family. While all but one of my five children are now grown, I love that five of my grandchildren will be students at Maple Corner this year. It is a special reminder each day that this school isn't just where I work. It's a place that has become part of our family's story, and I feel incredibly grateful to share it with yours.
